Sažetak:(from the preface) This book is a response to the enormous challenge of managing ethnic diversity in the twenty-first century. Increased international trade, migration, and travel have dramatically altered patterns of ethnic contact around the world. People of different ethnicities now routinely come into contact with one another in work, social, and other settings, and the amount of interethnic contact promises to increase in the future. In particular, this book attempts to address how ethnic contact is related to identity and conflict. Interethnic contact involves people who often look different, and have different cultural and ethnic beliefs, values, and behavioral patterns. In many cases, such differences are exaggerated to solidify ethnic boundaries and serve ethnic solidarity, to build up walls around groups rather than to celebrate cultural diversity. Events over the last few decades--including 9-11 and violent conflict in Rwanda, Israel, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, the Indian subcontinent, and dozens of other "hot spots"--suggest that we are not moving in the right direction. This book aims to be both conceptual and practical in addressing ethnic violence and cultural conflict with a global perspective. Thus, our goal is not only a scientific update, but also a practical guide for those who interact with people from different ethnic and cultural groups both at home and abroad.
